Participation has been the theme for the past 14 years of the Tathra Wharf to Waves and this year will be no exception.

One of the entrants who takes participation to its limit is local doctor and Tathra resident Matthew Nott.

Dr Nott has entered both the 600 and 1200 metre swims each year as well as completed each of the Bega to Beach bike rides.

It has been quite an effort, but one of which Dr Nott said he is quite proud.

“It is such a fantastic community event that it needed everyone’s support when it started all those years ago when I started,” he said.

While he doesn’t swim as much these days, Dr Nott said swimming in the ocean is a great feeling.

“It’s lovely swimming in the ocean by yourself, but doing it in a big group is just fantastic.”

As for training, Dr Nott considers his preparation for this year’s event was last year’s event. And while the bike ride can be tough, it is also enjoyable.

“I keep pretty fit so it should be okay. That’s the thing about the weekend’s events – they are great fun to be involved in.”

Dr Nott said there were a few people who had done the same as he had and while it’s not a real competition, there is a rather large competitive spirit among those who enter.

“It’s pretty much who will be the last man standing,” he said.

“There’s Dave Forrest over in Madagascar who I have a challenge with each year.

“There are a few others around who like to think they’ll keep going, but I’m determined to be still going for quite a few years yet.”

Dr Nott is looking forward to the event.

“I can’t wait. It raises much-needed funds for the surf club, the pre-school and the fire shed so I ask anyone who is thinking about entering to do so.

“They don’t have to be the best swimmer or bike rider around, just come along and be involved.”
