An earlier warning predicted the flooding would occur around 10pm.
Earlier: The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood warning for the Bega River.
The BoM predicted that flooding will reach 5.1m at the Bega North gauge at 10pm on Monday.
At this height, low-lying areas near the river and its tributaries will be flooded.
Water is likely to spread over roads and farmlands from upstream of Bega to the Jellat Jellat Flats.
There is a high probability that the following will occur:
- At 4.60m: Princes Highway closes due to water over the road.
- At 5m: Auckland Street closed at north-east end, eastern side of town becomes inundated. Lower areas of Bega Street should be evacuated; mostly commercial premises.
Motorists should avoid driving through flood waters, which may have washed away road surfaces and could be deeper or faster-flowing than they look.
Farmers should take action to protect pumps, other equipment and livestock.
The BoM said an average of 160mm of rain had fallen during the past 36 hours to 3pm on Monday, with further rain forecast for the next 24 hours.
At this stage it is not possible to predict the flood peak because of uncertainty over how much more rain will fall.
River Heights:
- Brogo R at North Brogo 6.48m rising 4pm Monday Brogo R at Angledale 6.06m rising 3pm
- Bemboka R at Morans Crossing 3.29m falling 4pm
- Bega R at Bega North 2.50m rising 3.30pm
