Year 8 student Andrew Madden said he enjoyed the experience and explained how the timber was shaped together then taped and glued.
Andrew and the other students who built the canoe, including Kevin Campbell, Rama Agius, Keith Pickalla and Luke Timbery, took turns paddling it out on the lake. “It goes really, really smooth,” he said.
Teacher Todd Helton said it was part of project-based learning that kept the students engaged using equipment and tools available at the school. Designer Michael Storer donated the design for the 16-foot canoe, while a Narooma community member donated the timber.
The teachers, support class assistants and students then enjoyed a barbecue and principal Tony Fahey even came down to check out the canoe.
