Sydney Water’s water efficiency expert Nelson Wallis has offered a few tips to keep the garden looking good in summer while also saving money.
The top tip is to water the plants before 9am, which allows them to use the water throughout the day. It also limits the amount of water lost to evaporation.
Watering cans or hoses with trigger nozzles can help ensure the water only goes where it’s needed.
Covering your garden with mulch can save up to 70 per cent of water normally lost to evaporation.
Water the roots of your plants and not the leaves, as this is where the water is actually needed.
Remove weeds as soon as possible as they use valuable water to grow.
When adding new plants go for natives or similar plants that need less water and maintenance.
