Malcolm Lucas began with the Bega Ambulance Service in 1971.
Working there was hard, to start with, and the low number of ambulance officers made the job difficult.
“When I first started officers would go out with one person in each car,” Mr Lucas said.
“Out in the country you would end up with a family member or a neighbour driving the car into town while you were in the back treating the patient.”
Ex-staff who had served the Bega Ambulance Service attended the opening of the service’s new station on Friday, November 13.
Mr Lucas said the new station was an improvement on the old one in Canning St.
“The old one was falling to pieces – they had about four floods through there,” he said.
