The notification has been posted on the ILGA website, with several objectors in the community already applauding the decision.
Staunch opponent Paul Payten circulated an email about the decision late Tuesday afternoon.
“Power to the people I say,” Mr Payten wrote.
“Nice one Bermagui community. We can make a difference...though they may try again.”
Those sentiments were echoed by the Bega Valley Shire Residents and Ratepayers Association (BVSRRA), which “extended its congratulations to the people of Bermagui for the success of their campaign” against the BWS application.
“It was not lost on many in the Bega Valley community how Woolworths amended its original development application submitted to Bega Valley Shire Council, removing reference to a retail liquor outlet after the council expressed concerns about its inclusion,” BVSRRA secretary John Richardson said.
“After the revised development application was approved by BVSC, Woolworths cynically determined to resume its pursuit of the liquor licence, lodging an application directly with the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.
“Needless to say, public submissions made by the community overwhelmingly opposed the granting of a licence,” Mr Richardson said.
The rejection of the BWS application comes more than a year after it was submitted.
More to come.
