“It was about a week ago,” close friend Patrick Aberdeen told the Bega District News on Thursday.
“She came over and told us she’d received death threats from a couple."
Mr Aberdeen said the threats have been reported to police.
He said the family was upset by a Sydney media report this week which claimed to have details of the 26-year-old's post-mortem.
Post-mortem results have not been officially released
The article also stated Ms Cave was last seen alive on Monday, October 12.
Detective Inspector Kevin McNeil confirmed that Ms Cave was last seen at 10am on Tuesday, October 13, in Bega.
Mr Aberdeen pleaded for anyone with any information on Ms Cave to come forward and call Crime Stoppers.
“Even if it’s just a shred of information let the police know,” he said.
Body found of man questioned after Marnie Lee Cave's death
An associate of Marnie Lee Cave, whose body was found under a bridge on the NSW Far South Coast, has been found dead.
The body of the man, 52, was found at a house in Valley Street, Bega, about 12.40am on Thursday, the Bega District News reported.
The police had a statement from the man regarding the death of Ms Cave, 26.
The police are not treating the man's death as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
Two campers found Ms Cave's body last Wednesday and Fairfax Media understands it showed signs of strangulation.
Her handbag and phone were missing but whoever killed Ms Cave left her wearing her butterfly pendant necklace.
Police released a photograph of the distinctive pendant in a bid to identify her.
It has since emerged that Far South Coast police and Homicide Squad detectives are treating Ms Cave's death as a murder.
Her family and the community are trying to comprehend why anyone would want Ms Cave, who was studying childcare at TAFE and volunteered with helping the homeless and disadvantaged, dead.
Investigators are now trying to fill the gap between when she was last seen in Bega last Tuesday to when her body was found the following morning.
She was last seen walking past Mosmen Motors in Bega about Tuesday lunchtime last week.
Close friend Patrick Aberdeen said Ms Cave approached him a week ago, unnerved after receiving a death threat from someone she knew.
"She was a bit worried due to the fact that person was a bit intimidating," he said.
Ms Cave had battled with domestic violence and depression in the past but she didn't let that cloud her bubbly personality, friends said.
She would spend four nights a week with Mr Aberdeen and his family, while many weekends were spent at the beach and enjoying barbecues.
"Marnie was my li'l sis, she was my sister from another mother," Mr Aberdeen remembered.
"She was like a big sister to the girls here, like an aunty."
Ms Cave, who moved to Bega in 2011 after doing most of her schooling in the ACT, had recently moved in with her mother after breaking up with a boyfriend.
How Ms Cave, who didn't own a car, got from Bega to Tathra is a question playing on Mr Aberdeen's mind.
"The most important part is from Tuesday lunchtime to Wednesday morning," he said.
"Anyone who may have driven past that morning and has information, please come forward.
"If the person is out there and has a guilty conscience, put the family at ease."
Ms Cave will be farewelled at a funeral next week.
