Police hope a pendant found on the body of a woman discovered on the Far South Coast on Wednesday will help identify her.
The body of the woman was found under the Mogareeka Bridge on the Bega River at about 8.15am on October 14.
Addressing the media yesterday, Far South Coast Crime Manager Detective Inspector Kevin McNeil said the body was that of a female, described as between 20 and 35 years of age.
She was between 160cm and 170cm tall, of caucasian appearance, medium build and with brown hair.
Det McNeil said the sterling silver butterfly pendant was found on a necklace on the woman’s body and he hoped someone from the public would come forward to identify her.
The picture above shows an enlarged copy of the pendant.
“If anyone identifies that necklace, could they contact police on 1800 333 000 or (if anyone) knows a person that may be missing who is wearing that necklace,” he said.
“We have not identified the deceased at this stage and that is what we are seeking to do.
“We have searched the area surrounding and will continue with the canvas of that area,” Det McNeil said.
He said police also sought information about vehicle movements in the area.
“If anyone has information about any vehicles with people (in them) prior to 8am yesterday, around the area, on the Bermagui-Tathra road, we would like to hear,” he said.
“There were a number of vehicles inside that crime scene and we have inspected those vehicles and we will continue our inquiries.”
Homicide and forensic officers are assisting investigators.
An autopsy will be conducted on Friday.
Det McNeil would not be drawn on how long the woman may have been deceased or where the body may have entered the water.
He said all missing person leads were being followed nationally.
