When we published an editorial on public transport’s potential to create jobs, but its shortcomings in the Valley, the response was immediate and well-reasoned. A selection is reprinted below. Join the conversation on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/BegaNews

All local transport providers and stakeholders have worked extremely hard to improve services and have trialled every thing from extra services and ridiculously low fares – however they have not worked.
Pensioners and seniors can catch any route bus service in the Bega Valley for only $2.50 a day and yet even in a community full of people eligible for the low fares, the buses run near empty.
The operators have put buses on that depart Bega after 5pm, as people wanted that, but when it come down to it, they didn't use it.
I agree public transport can be improved, but until the public actually utilises the existing services or trial services, they will not increase.

When my wife originally moved to town she had to turn down several jobs in Merimbula as she had no licence to drive to work and the last bus back to Bega at the time was at 4.30pm. We really need something to support 9-5 workers.

Don't know about the word "regular". How about a public transport system. What exists now is a farce.
Brad Wilton
I had to hitch most days from Bega to Merimbula and back again due to not having a car and a lack of a bus service in the general 9-5 working hours.
If I didn’t want to hitch I would have to catch an early school bus and be at least an hour early for work, or catch a bus that would get me there an hour late. And it wasn’t exactly a cheap fare, which is understandable.
Even a community-based program for people who need a lift for work would be beneficial.

There was virtually none when I moved here in 1983. It's a lot better than what it was, but it should also support people getting to and from work.
