On Wednesday Patricia Shields, a loyal Liberal Party servant from Dubbo, was elected to the party's NSW Women's Council. Two days later she was gone, not just from that position of country vice president, but the party too.

Her resignation came after Fairfax Media enquired about seemingly anti-Muslim and far right material posted to her Facebook page.

Ms Shields has avidly shared dozens of posts from groups including Australians United Against Sharia Law, Reclaim Australia and Britain First, a far right political party opposed to multiculturalism.

The material includes a petition requesting all Australian mosques be shut down.

Other posts call for the burqa to be banned, link halal certification to terrorism, or demand aid to Islamic nations be completely cut.

"Let them hate us for free," continued one such post, shared from a page called "Stop the izlamisation of our nation".

Another shared post attacked the United Nations as "run by Muslims for Muslims". "It is the second biggest joke in our world, behind Islam itself!" it said.

Contacted on Friday for her views of Islam, Ms Shields, the mother of Dubbo deputy mayor Ben Shields, said: "I think I've only got the views of everyone else".

But she declined to talk about her Facebook posts as "it's not really a good time," later telling Fairfax Media: "It's against party rules for me to talk to the media. But thank you for your interest. Goodbye."

That afternoon Fairfax Media contacted the party's state director Tony Nutt about the posts. Barely an hour later, he said she was no longer a member of the party, having resigned that afternoon.

"And the reason she's resigned is that she has indicated to me that she has made, if you like, an error of judgment in being associated with those posts which of course are posts from other groups," Mr Nutt said.

These other groups include two Facebook pages opposing a mosque in the Victorian town of Bendigo, where anti-Islam protests took place on Saturday, forcing the cancellation of a food and wine festival due to safety concerns.

"She has apologised to the party and she has resigned not simply from the [Women's Council] office but from the party," Mr Nutt said.

The incident is highly embarrassing for the Liberal Party, which has not only put the spotlight on strengthening multiculturalism in response to the Parramatta terrorist attack, but also promoted the need for more female representation.

Following the March election, Premier Mike Baird said the Liberal party "must be representative of the whole community".

Fairfax Media understands the Liberal Party NSW Women's Council position of country vice president, won by Ms Shields, had otherwise been uncontested.

Ms Shields had said she stood for the spot because "I thought that people should know what it's like for a country woman to be in the Liberal Party".

On Friday Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull urged all Australians to foster a culture of mutual respect.

"We have to call out the language, the examples of disrespect, the language of hatred wherever it is practised," Mr Turnbull said.
