Skipper Johnathan Thurston’s kick swayed between the posts to bring home the club’s first-ever premiership in it’s 20-year history.
However, the backlash from Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett on Monday has left a bit of tarnish on the otherwise gleaming sheen of the grand final.
Fans are calling it the best grand final of all time, but Bennett thinks we all need a do-over.
Message boards are lighting up with some comments saying a replay has worked for the AFL, so why not the NRL?
But others are questioning whether Bennett would say anything if the Broncos had won in the same fashion - I doubt it.
There are valid arguments from both sides of the debate – to scrap golden point or not.
One comment likened golden point to a penalty shootout in soccer and said to scrap it.
I must admit, I have never been a fan of penalty shootouts myself, all the pressure is on the goalie (and some on the respective kickers), but that’s not a fair representation of the game.
It’s similar for golden point, the pressure is on the kickers to nail the shot, while there is often little the defense can do about it.
However, on the flip side should we just do a repeat every time the game ends in a draw?
Realistically do we want to go from an exhilarating point-for-point drawn game thriller to a rematch a week later?
I think for some fans sure, round two, why not?
But realistically the effort involved in calling back ground staff, officials, commentators and TV crews for a go-around is pushing it a bit.
Bennett is a top-level coach and deserves to say his piece, but maybe he could have waited another day or two before offloading a sour spray.
We should all just congratulate the Cowboys on their first premiership and delight in Sunday’s epic game.
What do you reckon about the season finisher – should golden point be scrapped or should Wayne Bennett zip his lip?
