The 28-year-old man was taken to hospital with head injuries after he was attacked outside The Collaroy hotel on Pittwater Road just before midnight on Sunday.
Police said an argument had broken out between a group of people, when the Newport man intervened to try to calm the situation. He was punched on the head and fell to the ground.
A witness said up to five people were involved in the argument, which was believed to have been about a relationship problem involving members of the group.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said the man was taken to Mona Vale Hospital, where he remained under observation on Monday morning.
No arrests have been made, but police from the Northern Beaches Local Area Command are speaking to a number of people.
They are now looking for a man who they believe can assist with their inquiries.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the online reporting page.
