Sean Burke, who was on the scene shortly after Saturday’s crash, said this was the latest serious incident between the Cobargo turn-off and Bermagui.
“There have been quite a few accidents along that stretch, some very serious like this one, and I believe that 100km/h is way too fast, especially with the road in such bad repair, as it is at the moment,” he said.
Bega Valley motorcyclist Glenn Cotter said the road between the Cobargo turn-off and Bermagui had a poor surface.
"It is a known bad stretch of road," he said.
"It's bumpy, it's narrow… it has lots of potholes and it falls away into the gravel quite quickly."
The same 100kmh corner was also the scene of a serious head-on collision in 2010 involving the 18-year-old son of then State Minister Steve Whan and a local couple.
That incident saw five of the six occupants involved, including Lachlan Whan, airlifted or transported by ambulance to hospital with serious injuries.
Investigations continue into the latest crash on Wallaga Lake Road at 1.20pm Saturday, September 26..
Police said initial investigations suggested a motorcycle and a Nissan utility crashed head-on.
The motorcyclist, a man believed to be aged in his 50s, died at the scene.
The driver of the utility, a 58-year-old Verona man, was taken to Bega Hospital to undergo mandatory blood and urine tests.
Traffic was diverted for a number of hours around the scene through forest roads around the Bermagui mountain bike track.
When the story broke on the Bega District News' Facebook page, it generated a lot of interaction.
Most of those commenting did not agree with lowering the speed limit:
That particular corner is dangerous as it comes from nowhere and gets tighter halfway around it. The whole corner needs to be engineered and realigned better.

Changing the speed limit would help to slow people down if it's a notorious corner. But… it's not hard to slow to a safe speed regardless of the limit.

It is easy to put this down to driver fault but if it happens continuously perhaps something needs revisiting. My son crashed at this exact spot, the tow truck driver was amazed at how many vehicles he has pulled from the same spot!
