Cr Britten was re-elected unopposed to the position at Wednesday’s meeting.
Meanwhile, Cr Liz Seckold retained her position as Deputy Mayor with seven votes, with Ann Mawhinney picking up the remaining two in an open show of hands.
During his address to colleagues, Cr Britten reflected on the growth of councillors and the many varied projects they have overseen during the past 12 months.
Major projects underway during this term of the council include the port and Action on Imlay in Eden, Merimbula’s airport, roundabout and bypass, the Tura library, Dickinson Oval in Bermagui, and the Civic Centre and Littleton Gardens in Bega.
“We have all [also] been involved in the extensive process of establishing this council as being Fit for the Future,” Cr Britten said.
“We remain on track to qualify for being Fit for the Future and we expect the results of the IPART recommendations and announcements by the state government in October or November this year.
“I believe as a council we work well as a team while still able to retain our individuality and ability to work within the community and its many interest groups.”
Cr Britten congratulated Cr Mawhinney for standing in the election during her first term as a councillor, saying it was good for the community.
He added though, leading a meeting was a challenge and a first-time councillor faced a steep learning curve.
Cr Seckold agreed, saying in her address it was an overwhelming feeling being elected to serve the community and that it took her some time before feeling more comfortable with procedures and “homework”.
“You soon realise council is all encompassing,” she said.
“Good communication skills, the ability to engage with the community, teamwork and organisational skills are essential attributes to perform the role as a conduit between council and the community.”
