Unity CEO Andrew McIlwain is joking if he thinks that the public will be satisfied with his weasel words.
The fact is that putting extremely toxic chemicals in a tailings pond at the head of our water supply is a recipe for disaster.
Well may Unity Mining say that other tailings pond catastrophes around the world are not relevant because of their ‘state of art’ technologies, but this is the exact same rhetoric that was used to justify some of the worst mining practices in history.
Greed will always come up with slippery arguments so that the elite few can cash in.
Mining companies will go to any lengths to make quick bucks for their shareholders.
Opponents have been accused of being ‘emotive’.
Of course we are; it’s our water, our beautiful river and our future that these cowboys are toying with.
Will Unity Mining be there to pay for the clean up in 50 or 100 years when the tailings pond leaks or collapses into our creeks and river?
The toxic waste is to be stored for all time, so who will take responsibility for the disaster that could happen in the future when we are all long gone?
It is an unacceptable burden to place on our children and all future generations.
Don’t be fooled by the slippery promises of jobs galore.
There are much better jobs to be had in clean industries growing food, supplying services and with our biggest employer in this region, tourism.
Tourists don’t visit poisoned rivers!
The future of our water supply is too important to be risked for the short term profits of the greedy few.
The community needs to stand united to fight off this ridiculous proposal and to ensure a clean water supply for all time.
Say ‘NO’ to the Unity Mines proposal.
