Whether there's a sentence handed down or not remains to be seen.
However, it's likely to be not - particularly with additional charges only recently laid and rolled into the one sentence hearing.
These are more charges he has pleaded guilty to - and it's a small mercy that, because of the pleas, the victims and families involved won't be dragged through a trial.
More guilty pleas...
Think about that for a moment.
He has admitted to abusing multiple children, on multiple occasions over the course of years.
Despite the legal system bundling up multiple crimes into one court case and perhaps sentences "to be served concurrently"; despite it taking a public outcry and metro media coverage before it was thought bail should be revoked; despite lawyers who tell us "he's holding up well" and wonder why the media is so interested in following this case; despite a judge who considers Van Ryn a "model citizen…other than the offending" (I wonder who is fighting for the victims in all this?); I am sure I speak on behalf of the community when I say this man is guilty of multiple instances of one of the most heinous crimes known to mankind and should expect the full weight of the law.
We can only hope the legal system comes up with a result that matches community expectations
- or is that naive wishful thinking?
