The preschool’s children made the playground’s initial design by drawing what they would like to see included in it.
Bermagui Preschool director/teacher Narelle Myers said they had managed to include almost everything the children came up with – aside from a kangaroo and a joey.
Five years ago, preschool board member Janette Neilson had the idea of expanding the preschool, which Ms Myers thought was a great idea.
The preschool expanded on to a section of the vacant land next door and, starting the construction work last August, transformed the empty space into a children’s paradise, with paths, a water pump, sand pit, amphitheatre, trampoline, cubby house and play equipment among other things.
A chook house, vegetable garden, shed and various fruit trees are still to go in, and the next big project for the preschool is building another room.
The playground had been funded through donations and fundraisers.
Michael Hallenan and Drew Forbes were the site’s building managers, and Narooma High School students studying construction helped with the labour.
“It is just a really good example of when everybody in the community comes together, you can create amazing things,” Ms Myers said.
“It’s a lasting, beautiful legacy for the children in the community.”
The playground was opened on the afternoon of Monday, July 27, attended by the preschool’s parents and children, Narooma High School representatives and community members.
The children took their parents to their favourite part of the playground, before one child cut a vine – in place of a ribbon, in keeping with the preschool’s sustainable philosophy – and the new space was declared open.
