Leah Martin has taken over the position from long-time principal Neil Rutherford, who retired this year.
The 32-year-old relocated from Pambula Public School where she spent four years as assistant then relieving principal.
“The job came up and I’ve always heard fantastic things about Bermagui,” Ms Martin said.
“I’m very lucky to have gotten the position.
“It’s a great school and a great community; everyone has been very friendly and welcoming.”
As Ms Martin has only been on the job for a few weeks, being offered the position just before the last school holidays, she has been getting to know everyone at the school as well as what it offers.
The number of her charges has almost halved between schools: Pambula Public has around 300 pupils while Bermagui only has about 160.
Ms Martin enjoys connecting with the school community and said Bermagui Public has a “family feel” to it.
“It is nice to have that close relationship with people,” she said.
“The number of students doesn’t make it busier or less busy as there are lots of great things happening here.”
Ms Martin has been in the Bega Valley for about 10 years, after she moved from Sydney to Merimbula Public School for her first job.
She currently lives in Wolumla, but enjoys the northward drive to work.
