AN ELDERLY woman has been flown to hospital in a serious condition after she and her partner were involved in a single-vehicle crash in Tathra.
The accident occurred around 12.50pm on Monday on Andy Poole Drive near the BIG4 Tathra Beach Holiday Park.
The couple’s car veered off the road, crossed the pavement and crashed through bushes before hitting a fence.
The male driver was freed and taken to Bega District Hospital with minor injuries, while the female passenger remained trapped inside the car for over an hour.
Paramedics were unable to access the woman due to the dangerous position of the car – the front wheel was over a storm water drain and paramedics had to wait for rescue services to stabilise the vehicle before they could gain access.
Bushes also had to be cut for rescue services to reach the doors.
The passenger was freed around 2.40pm, treated by Bega paramedics and then taken by the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Helicopter to Canberra Hospital in a serious condition.
Both the driver and passenger were aged in their early 90s.
The Volunteer Rescue Association, NSW Rural Fire Service, ambulance and police attended the scene.
Police directed traffic around the scene while the couple were evacuated.
