Eden scored after just three minutes and showed skill and determination but lacked depth with just a single player on the bench.
The Sharks started to warm to the task and it was veteran prop, Justin Zutt, who crashed across for the Sharks first two four-pointers and Moruya took an 8-6 lead after 15 minutes.
The rest of the first half was an arm wrestle as each side tried to get the upper hand with the teams but the score remained unchanged at the break.
It took another 12 minutes of the second half before the Sharks started to exert their authority, with Troy Potts crossing for a four-pointer.
The floodgates were opened as the Sharks used their reserves to advantage and posted tries through Merv Brierley, Craig Cottington, Adrian Andy and Barney Campbell.
At full-time the Sharks were comprehensive 34-6 winners.
Coach Michael Cottington was pleased with the team’s effort and praised their ball control and completions.
Cottington warned his side that the Tigers would be a tougher side at Eden next week and encouraged all of his charges to commit to the trip south next weekend.
The players’ player award went to Geoff McWhinney.
Three points in the best and fairest tally went to Lee Nye for the direction he added to the team.
Chris O’Meley received two points before appearing in first grade.
“He is still playing under 18s and is fast becoming a favourite with the crowd for his strong running and courage,” Sharks’ secretary John Cornall said.
Troy Potts received the remaining point for another strong game.
Moruya 34 (tries: Justin Zutt 2, Troy Potts, Merv Brierley, Adrian Andy and Barney Campbell; goals: Craig Cottington 2 and Niles Brigden) defeated Eden 6.
Sharkettes impress against Tigresses
The Sharkettes added to their win tally with a 20-4 victory against the Eden Tigers in the ladies’ league tag match on Sunday.
Moruya continues to improve and showed good ball control and strong defence.
The home side made the best possible start when it scored three tries through Jen Roqica, Ellie Doherty and Taylah Connaughton.
Moruya played in the same vein in the second stanza and co-coach Lana Badullovich crossed the try line before letting Eden in for its only points of the match.
The Sharkettes rounded off the scoring with a well-executed play.
It started with a double-switch move before Badullovich deftly kicked into the corner for her outside backs.
Erika Saines scooped up the ball and planted it across the try line to seal the game.
It was a good team effort and the best for Moruya were Hannah Cadogan, who received three points, Nicole Cowdroy with two points and Taylah Connaughton with one.
Moruya travels to Eden for a repeat match next weekend.
Moruya 20 (tries: Jen Roqica, Ellie Doherty, Taylah Connaughton, Lana Badullovich and Erika Saines) beat Eden 4.
Double points up for grabs
Moruya’s under 18s had a bye on the weekend but many players filled in reserve and first grade.
Next week the young Sharks tackle the combined Merimbula/
Bemboka/Eden team.
Due to the under 18s draw incorporating three full rounds, the boys will play for double points to make up for the abandoned round one clash.
