People with Lyme disease - an infection caused by tick bites - and their supporters are out and about in the community raising the profile of this debilitating disease and alerting the people to symptoms to look out for.
SE NSW is a hotspot for Lyme disease in Australia, according to Greg Watts of local support group, .
The Lymies are hosting an information stall at Friday’s SCPA Markets in Littleton Gardens Bega as part of awareness events being held in 20 countries around the world.
They are inviting people to stop by and have a chat about Lyme disease in Australia, take home information to share with family and friends, and maybe donate towards Lyme disease research projects in Australia.
At the information stall people will also be able to participate in the “Take a Bite Out of Lyme” challenge.
A photo booth will be set up and participants will be invited to take a photo of themselves biting on a wedge of lime while holding a Lyme disease awareness message and then share that image on their social media using #lymediseasechallenge and #lymediseasechallengeaustralia
The Country Women's Association is also addressing the issue of Lyme disease at is annual conference in Tamworth currently underway,
In addition to attempting to get greater recognition for the existence of the disease, the CWA has also thrown its support behind legalising medicinal cannabis at the conference.
The Association passed two motions, the first in support of the use of medicinal marijuana, and the second in support of the legalisation of growing, manufacturing and distributing marijuana for medicinal purposes.
