A swathe of players were unavailable on the day, but coach Kirsty McPaul was delighted byt the team’s defensive efforts in spite of the reduced field.
“Half the team unfortunately couldn’t make it, but the remaining girls more than stepped up,” McPaul said.
Eden posted plenty of shots on goal with two floating players, but the Wolumla outfit was able to repel their attacks and even post some forward runs.
“We played a surprisingly attacking brand of soccer,” McPaul said.
“We may not have had many shots on target, but their goalie got her fair share of hands on the ball.”
The Tigresses had kept Eden to a 0-0 scoreline by the first break.
Tigress goalie Anna Martin was worthy of praise repelling a relentless surge of shots on goal by the Killer Whales.
“Man of the match went to our enthusiastic goalie Anna, who did not drop a ball all day and was fantastic coming off the line,” McPaul said.
Unfortunately, the team found itself in trouble early in the second half.
Sophie Martin suffered an ankle injury soon after play resumed and the Wolumla outfit was limited to just seven players.
Eden was able to fire through two goals on the back of long range kicking of the Mitchell sisters, Kate and Mel, while coach Debbie Heron led through the midfield.
McPaul said she was thrilled with the efforts of her side in the trying conditions.
“The girls never backed down or gave up the whole game and I am once again so proud of the effort and skill they showed,” she said.
