The 40-minute live production underpins children’s instinctive understandings and feelings around personal safety in a non-confrontational and safe way, teaching them about warning signs, privacy, that it’s okay to say no if they don’t feel safe, and what to do if they feel unsafe or unsure.
The program has educated more than 445,000 Australian children since its inception in 2006 and in 2013 the NSW Department of Education and Communities commissioned an independent evaluation, which led to funding of $268,051 to support the state-wide roll-out of the Bravehearts Ditto in a Box resource.
Bravehearts Founder and CEO Hetty Johnson AM said every Australian child should be equipped with personal safety knowledge and skills.
“We know that child sexual assault is for the most part preventable and educating and empowering children is paramount to prevention and so important for us to do as parents, educators, carers and members of the community,” she said.
“Bravehearts will bring a holistic approach to Bega, working with parents and teachers, community leaders and the local council to create awareness and offer free education, information and counselling services.”
Students at Bega High School will participate in the “Love Bites” prevention and education program covering domestic and family violence and sexual assault.
Tailored for students in senior school aged between 15 and 17, the one-day workshop empowers and helps to build resiliency with activities to engage young people in a group format and encourage reflection on their own behaviours and relationships.
