However, confirming the wonderful spirit of cooperation in the Bega district’s emergency services, that’s exactly what happened this week when members of the Jellat Rural Fire Service attended the Bega Volunteer Rescue Association headquarters with a cheque in hand.
“It may seem unusual to have one volunteer group giving to another,” Jellat RFS firefighter Peter “Wally” Law said on Thursday night.
“The reason here being both volunteer organisations work well together, but we have a more solid support of funds from the council and Rural Fire Service NSW – not that we have much,” he added.
“However, every dollar the VRA spends – except for a bit from the State Government – they earn themselves.”
Bega VRA squad captain Steve Banner was very appreciative of the donation.
“This is certainly much appreciated – every cent counts,” Mr Banner said.
“It’s great our groups work closely together in helping save lives and we will continue to do so.”
The Bega VRA squad was established in 1975 and is a primary rescue agency for Bega and its surrounds covering motor vehicle accidents, cliff rescue, land searches and animal rescue.
