Informally called “Lamont Lane” or “the laneway” by locals, it is located between Montague and Bunga Streets. 

Bega Valley Shire Council unanimously voted for a proposal to name it Sherwin Lane at its meeting last week, following the supermarket’s completion.

Gloria and Leo Sherwin are long-time residents of a house on Young St, next door to the new Woolworths, and were pleased with the proposal.

“That would be wonderful,” Ms Sherwin said of the proposal.

“This has been a Sherwin home for over 100 years.

“The rest of the people on this street came along long after the Sherwins.”  

Mr Sherwin has lived at the house since he was six years old.

The lane’s title was selected under council’s policy of naming new streets after the town’s war service men and women who have died due to active service, eminent persons in the locality, historical property in the area, or a locality’s common theme for road names.

Mr Sherwin’s brother Arthur was killed in New Guinea while serving in World War 2 and his father George Herbert had a large horse team in town, which he used for the milk run. 

While the lane name proposal sits well with the Sherwins, the Woolworths development making it necessary remains disquieting.

In April last year, the BDN spoke to the Sherwins who were concerned the new Woolworths would cut off the sun to their garden as well as their view of the ocean (BDN, 22/4/14). 

Now, Ms Sherwin said there is a “buzz on all the time” from Woolworths, which she has gotten used to although it is more noticeable at night, but their main problem was with a light pole.

“We lost our beautiful view up north where we could nearly see to Narooma,” she said.  

“We’re just looking at a cement wall now.

“And on the little bit of view we had left there’s a big dirty light pole there, on the corner between our property and Woolworths’ property.” 

The Sherwin Lane proposal will be advertised, calling for objections, with a period of 28 days for submissions to be received. 

If no objections are received in this time period, BVSC staff will continue with the road naming proposal.
