However, there was a wonderful added surprise for Eddie James Hergenhan and Charlotte Isabella Fyson on Sunday.
The two little bubs were baptised at a special Easter morning service at Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Tathra.
Without any prior knowledge of a connection, their families discovered through discussion on the day that both babies are direct descendants of the original Hergenhan pioneers in the Bega Valley.
John, Peter and Casper Hergenhan migrated from Wertheim in Germany in the 19th Century.
They sailed from Hamburg in late 1861 on the Cesar Godeffroy, and arrived 94 days later in January 1862.
Settling in the Stony Creek area north of Bega, the Hergenhans were farmers, horticulturalists and vignerons.
Seven generations later saw the arrival of Charlotte and Eddie.
Charlotte Fyson’s great-grandmother was Gladys Hergenhan (nee Northcott) and Eddie Hergenhan is the great-grandson of Syd Hergenhan.
Through her mother, Elizabeth, Charlotte is a direct descendant of the pioneer John, while Eddie’s father Michael is a descendant of Casper.
Charlotte is the daughter of Damon and Elizabeth Fyson of Wollongong.
Eddie is the son of Michael and Megan Hergenhan of Tathra.
Grandparents are Ken and Veronica Northcott, of Bega, and Gerard and Wendy Hergenhan, from Tathra.
Elizabeth Fyson said once they noticed the other name to be baptised on the day, she and her mum Veronica spent the car trip working back through the generations “trying to figure out who’s who and how we all fitted together”.
“It was wonderful and we got to have a nice chat [with the other family] afterwards,” Ms Fyson said.
Megan Hergenhan said her side of the family wasn’t aware of the family connection, but that everyone was really excited once it was revealed.
“We knew there was going to be another baptism on the same day, but we didn’t know [that connection was there],” she said.
“We were rapt to find out they shared common ancestors.”
Being such an auspicious occasion, both babies were reportedly on their best behaviour.
