The free MarineRescue App, developed specifically for NSW waters and conditions, is suitable for both Apple and Android mobile devices and can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.
As well as providing boaters with important safety information and a range of other useful resources, the new MarineRescue App offers users an alternative means of logging on and logging off with their nearest Marine Rescue NSW unit when out on the water and in mobile phone range.
An optional live safety tracking option, automatically updates their position every 30 minutes.
Marine Rescue Merimbula unit commander Bill Blakeman, stressed that the app did not replace EPIRBs or marine radios and boaters should still ensure they carried all required equipment to immediately summon help in an emergency.
He encouraged local and visiting boaters to download the free MarineRescue App and hoped it would persuade more of them to take advantage of this quick and simple way of connecting to the Marine Rescue NSW safety network to get help in an emergency.
A number of boaters have already taken advantage of the new app in the lead up to the Easter long weekend.
Visiting Melbourne boater Bruce Chynoweth said he likes the ease of use of the new MarineRescue App and has also loaded it on his wife and son’s mobiles.
