Local residents are invited to comment on the proposed development when the application is exhibited from Wednesday, April 8.
Mayor Michael Britten said the new library is an exciting development for the Bega Valley Shire that will deliver a range of valuable services to the local community.
“The proposed library will benefit all age groups, including students, parents and children, seniors and young people, and it will provide the community with access to meeting and activity spaces,” Cr Britten said.
“Alterations would involve internal building work and the installation of joinery and furniture.
“It would also require an upgrade to existing accessibility and a new main entry off Tura Beach Drive.
“The proposed new entrance and forecourt will be a very important component of the building and will give the library a strong identity.”
Cr Britten said the site is conveniently located near two bus stops, and residents of the adjacent retirement village will have a valuable library service at their doorstep.
He agreed with the consultant’s view that converting the tavern into a library is an exciting development for the Bega Valley Shire and a very positive outcome for the local community.
Cecilia Kugler, from CK Design International, an independent consultant, has been engaged to design the new library.
Ms Kluger said she had recently completed the redesign of a number of libraries including Katoomba, Randwick, Gordon and the State Libraries of Sydney and Queensland.
“We love what we do and consistently create spaces people love,” she said.
