There are plenty of options for experiencing the natural wonders of the United States south-west, but my preference would be to hire a car. Driving in the US is not challenging, and nothing beats the freedom to go where you like when you like. You wouldn't choose this option if you're short of time and you would rather someone else did all the booking of accommodation, but planning your trip has involved extensive research and that gives you a much deeper appreciation of the place.
Age might be another reason why you would choose a guided bus tour, but if you're driving at home, driving on the opposite side of the road is not a problem. Collect your hire car from a city location or even from your hotel, rather than from an airport, and don't expect to hop behind the wheel as soon as you arrive, but give yourself time to get over jet lag. The internet has plenty of enthusiastic feedback on self-drive trips through the US's West.
