The area was officially opened on Thursday at a ceremony attended by Bega Valley Shire Mayor Michael Britten and BVSC coastal management officer Kyran Crane among others.
“We’re really happy with how the work has gone so far,” Mr Crane said.
“It’s all about creating a gateway into Bega, a nice entry to the town.”
Still to be completed is work around the western foreshore of the lagoon and as well as at the south lagoon and the project aims to be finished in mid-2016.
Willow removal and replanting of native plants will take place on the western foreshore.
The future work will be accompanied by a Kiss’s Lagoon catchment industry stormwater audit and a local primary school stormwater education program.
As part of the education program local schools will hold a planting day as well as have interactive one-hour sessions based around stormwater.
The audit will make sure businesses are following correct procedures around stormwater, for instance not emptying chemicals down the drain as it could have consequences on the Kiss’s Lagoon environment.
“It’s not policing, it’s about educating,” Cr Britten said.
The work was funded through a $100,000 NSW Environmental Trust grant and $50,000 from the BVSC.
