Hosted by the Far South Coast Motorcycle Club, the cup is a two-day race meet sponsored by Hotondo Homes and Kampman Transport.
“This is a flat track motorcycle race meeting held on the speedway at Tantawangalo,” event spokesman Brett Lever said.
As opposed to riders using the motocross track at the speedway, races are held on the flat course itself and becomes a test of speed, and slide.
“Race bikes are modified motocross bikes mainly, and they will go up against some specialised flat track bikes called sliders,” Lever said.
Spectators are more than welcome to watch over the weekend and Lever said there would be racing action everyone could enjoy.
“Our race program features riders from four years of age to pro riders and even an over 35s class.
“We run all different class machines and age brackets from nippers on 50 and 65cc to 85, 150 and 250cc for our junior classes.
“In our senior events we run pro 250, pro 450, an open class and some older pre 1985 machines.”
The South Coast Cup has been an annual event for the senior classes, but Lever said the club will offer a junior cup this year as well.
“We are running a Sapphire Cup for the 250cc Junior class,” he said.
The weekend attracts riders from right across NSW and the ACT, but will also feature a large contingent of local riders.
“We have a huge amount of local talent that will be appearing this Easter weekend all trying to win their class and take home a trophy,” Lever said.
The round also draws in some of the country’s top flat track racers.
“Most notable of these riders is Ian Hamilton, the 2013 Australian number two, who last year tried his luck in the USA with some credible results.
“Multiple time Australian title holder Luke Gough, who also had a successful couple of years in the US taking on the world’s best.
“And our own Cody Sampson from Narooma, who has won the South Coast Cup before.”
Sampson recently finished runner-up in the Kings and Queens event behind Micheal Vecchi from the ACT.
Vecchi will also be taking part over the weekend to vie for the $500 prize.
Lever said the Sapphire Speedway had full canteen facilities available over both days and urged spectators to head along.
He was eager to promote a number of local sponsors for the event and hoped to see a big crowd.
Racing starts at 11am on both days and entry is by gold coin donation.
