The unveiling of the first ever Candelo-Bemboka women’s team, the Pink Panthers, was a highlight for the club on Saturday.
The squad took on the Eden Tigerettes and showed plenty of enthusiasm.
Unfortunately Eden got the upper hand early through a series of handling errors.
Sharon Spink and Steph Robin led the charge for the Eden try-scorers, while Miriam Hennessey picked up a double.
However, the development of confidence was visible as the team adapted to its first official outing.
A telling sign was that Eden led 24-0 by the break, but only mustered one more try in the second half to win 30-0.
A highlight for the Pink Panthers included a 60-metre dash by Chloe Lucas after breaking through the Eden line.
Caitlin Johnson planted the ball for the Panthers on the siren, but unfortunately the try was dismissed by the refs, leaving the team scoreless.
In the reserve grade, the Panthers mustered a tremendous fight-back to level with Eden, before succumbing to a late charge.
Eden led 16-4 at the break with tries to Koorin Campbell and Mark Gray.
A reinvigorated Panthers outfit was just two tries short of levelling after the break.
A try after nine minutes had them within striking distance, then Grant Moon ran from the kick 80 metres in a solo run to level the scores.
Candelo-Bemboka laid on another to take the lead, but it was Eden scoring a flurry of tries late in the game to win in a high-scoring affair.
Alan Aldridge and Justin Swires ran in late tries for the Eden outfit with the score blowing out 40-20 in favour of the Tigers.
