Bega Valley Shire general manager Leanne Barnes confirmed the council’s removal of the two trees Saturday morning, but acknowledged more could have been done to inform the community in advance.
“The trees were removed to allow for an upgrade of the existing car park and that six appropriate trees will be selected as replacements,” Ms Barnes said.
“Several minor works, including construction of a small retaining wall, replacement of a section of fence and removal of the trees have been completed locally to reduce final tender costs and to minimise inconvenience to car park users,” she said.
“Details of the works are included in the council meeting agenda from February 25, but we do recognise that it would have been more effective to inform the community through our regular media channels.
“The Gipps St car park works will provide Bega with an additional 37 parking spaces located close to retail and hospitality businesses.
“This will play a vital role in providing for future development within the Bega CBD,” she said.
