In 1986 Smith was part of a band in Adelong with John and Ann Chalmers, plus did stints with the Tumut Valley Country Music Club.
During this time he penned many songs with no intention of recording them, more as a pastime.
When he moved to Canberra he was involved for a short time with the Queanbeyan Country Music Club.
He later decided to concentrate on raising his family and gave it away and moved to Yerong Creek.
Four years ago Smith and his wife Christine joined the Culcairn Country Music Club as walk up artists where he is avid worker for the club and is also on the committee.
Due to his popularity he was encouraged to attend the Rosewood Country Roundup in 2011 where his popularity went to a new level and he was invited to be a paid artist in 2012.
This lead to him being asked to perform at the Ariah Park, Leeton and Terara country music festivals.
Smith has recorded two CDs and his popularity as a bush balladeer grows each time he performs.
John Smith will perform at Wolumla Hall on Saturday from 7pm with tickets at the door.
There will be supper available as well as a lucky door prize, and more enquiries call Karen on 0408 429 402.
