Community development and library coordinator Anne Cleverley said people are invited to knit, crochet, felt or sew a red poppy for the project.
“Every shire library will have an honour board listing the names of 185 local servicemen who lost their lives in World War One,” Ms Cleverly said.
“People can make a poppy and pin it next to a name on the board.
“We also plan to make a ‘field’ of knitted and crocheted poppies which will be ‘planted’ outside the Bega Valley Regional Gallery and Bega library on April 24.”
Local and family history librarian Linda Albertson said people loved the idea of making poppies including local knitter Doreen Elliott, who has so far made more than 100 poppies.
“You can use any shade of red wool and poppies should be no more than 15cm in diameter for the poppy field and 7cm for the honour board,” Ms Albertson said.
“People can include a small dedication with their poppy to personally commemorate a family member or friend who served as a Digger in WW1 or has died while serving Australia in any war or conflict.
“Free kits and patterns are available from any shire library and people can submit as many poppies as they wish to their nearest library.
“The patterns are only a guide and we are happy for people to experiment with different materials and embellishments to create unique poppies,” Ms Albertson said.
Between 2014 and 2018, Australia will commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since Australia’s involvement in WW1.
