Run as a community facility, the club says it supports the surrounding area wherever possible and provides fundraising opportunities for local charities such as the Tathra and Bega Lions Clubs.
“Volunteers from these not-for-profit organisations operate the bars and food outlets each meet and in return the club gives them a percentage of the profits made,” Sapphire Coast Turf Club secretary/manager Rob Tweedie said.
He also said that wherever possible the club’s requirements are met by local suppliers and service providers.
As an example, a team from WorkAbility maintains the track.
“We provide regular rewarding work to individuals who have been previously overlooked for work opportunities and in return their enjoyment and dedication to the job ensures our track is always in top condition,” he said.
He said the track is considered one of the best race tracks in regional Australia.
Local sporting clubs will also benefit from the inaugural 100 metre gallop held tomorrow.
“The Sapphire Coast Turf Club is donating $500 to the club of the winning female runner and $500 to the club of the winning male runner, to be spent on new sporting gear,” Mr Tweedie said.
“With rival clubs and codes competing, it’s sure to be a hotly contested event.”
The carnival will also feature a markettomorrow, and on Sunday visitors will be able to taste Sapphire Coast Wilderness Oysters and watch Fashions on the Field.
There will also be a jumping castle on both days and additional children’s activities will be run by Cancer Council NSW on Sunday.
“We’re set for an outstanding two days of racing, which will culminate in the $35,000 Bega Cheese Bega Cup on Sunday – the richest race on the Sapphire Coast,” Mr Tweedie said.
“With over $200,000 in prize money, the Bega Cup Carnival is the best weekend on our racing calendar.”
Free buses will run to and from the Sapphire Coast Turf Club and Bega, Tathra, Merimbula, Pambula and Eden each day.
