Mr Forrest is currently volunteering on board the hospital ship Africa Mercy off the east coast of Africa.
David is principal at the on-board school, his wife Justine is a photographer documenting the ship's mission and patients' stories, while children Annabelle and Charlotte are attending the school.
The Squidgy Club member – meaning he has completed over 10 races in Wharf to Waves events over the years – found the flights back home too expensive, so mapped out a course in the ocean where he was.
Then a cyclone hit the island and he was unable to complete it.
Undeterred he swum the 1200-metre distance by completing lengths in a swimming pool.
The Wharf To Waves committee unanimously voted to have his results recorded as part of the event.
Mr Forrest’s time was recorded at 25.07 in the 1200-metre swim, meaning he came 51st in the male category.
He also came 33rd with a time of 16.10 in the 50-59 age group 600-metre swim.
