NPWS area manager for the Central Area Preston Cope said some roads leading to or within Biamanga and Mimosa Rocks National Parks have had to be temporarily closed to all traffic following damage sustained by storm events and heavy rain last December and in recent days.
“In particular, Clarks and Mumbulla Trig Roads have sustained significant damage,” Mr Cope said.
“These roads provide access from the Princes Hwy to Mumbulla Creek Falls through private property and state forest leading to Mumbulla Creek Falls picnic area in the Biamanga National Park.
“The roads have been damaged by rain, causing deep ruts to be formed and rocks exposed in some sections of the road surface, making driving on these dirt roads difficult even for experienced drivers.
“We have been keeping visitors informed on access conditions by erecting signs, installing an electronic notice board and information has also been posted on the NPWS website,” he said.
“Unfortunately access to Mumbulla Creek Falls from the Princes Hwy was unable to be graded prior to Christmas due to rain delays.
“We were however, able to complete all the grading to the major camping areas in Mimosa Rocks National Park.”
This week NPWS has restarted its grading program.
Clarks Road and Mumbulla Trig Road will be closed to all vehicles during works until Friday.
All visitors and locals are asked to avoid this area during road works as they will not have access to Mumbulla Creek Falls from the Princes Hwy.
People can still visit Mumbulla Creek Falls via alternate access using Mumbulla Creek Rd off Doctor George Mt Rd.
“We thank visitors and locals for their patience during this time remind people to drive with caution and to the current road conditions,” Mr Cope said.
Further storms and heavy rainfall last weekend has also resulted in temporary closures to the roads leading to visitor areas at Bithry Inlet and Middle Beach in Mimosa Rocks National Park.
Visitors and locals are advised to avoid using these roads until there has been sufficient dry weather.
