NYE party, country style
One-and-a-half-million people, crammed in to a few parks around Sydney Harbour, standing-room only, and not even permitted to share a glass of bubbly...then to be followed by enormous transport challenges just to get home to bed.

And they call that a party?
Bega could surely provide something more exciting...at least for a discerning few.
Perhaps an enormous New Year's bash, extending over several days, could make Bega the place-to-be on future New Year's Eves.
A sort of combined B&S ball cum music festival cum country show cum wine and food festival.
In other words, a hell of a country party!
Sounds like it could be the ideal not-to-be-missed event.
The old Bega racecourse could become camping ground central.
Bega has facilities to accommodate multiple major events - the showground, the sports centre, the new town hall.
And, as last Friday's Bega District News revealed, there are an enormous number of other activities and attractions in the local area - including cycling and mountain biking in Tathra, the Sapphire Coast Turf Club races, the Candelo Markets, showjumping, the Sapphire Speedway races, numerous galleries and, of course, nearby beaches and lakes - which will provide additional appeal to potential visitors.
We could probably even organise some midnight New Year's Eve fireworks if necessary.
Any community interest in the idea?

Outstanding citizens?
The South East Fibre Exports and outstanding citizenship - they’ve got to be joking (BDN, 19/12).
It is fitting that children should be rewarded and honoured for their hard work and other contributions during the school year.
And in these times when funding for education is tight, it is quite understandable that schools will accept sponsorships and donations from wherever they can get them.
However, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that South East Fibre Exports (SEFE) has sponsored an Award for Outstanding Citizenship at a local school.
This company does not have a good record in corporate citizenship.
The SEFE woodchip mill is Australia's first and worst chipmill.
It has been responsible for the death and suffering of countless native animals, birds and other wildlife, poured millions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, ruined waterways and topsoil and been an ongoing burden on NSW and Australian taxpayers.
Outstanding corporate citizenship it is not.
If SEFE wanted to display some outstanding corporate citizenship, it would close down today and leave the forests and their wildlife to heal and recover in peace.
That is my wish for 2015.
