“To protect the children we are unable to identify ourselves, although many do know who we are.
“This story was almost kept hidden in the shadows of the judicial system.
“However, the perseverance of our local newspaper and ABC journalists ensured the unfolding story was reported on.
“We would so much like to personally shake the hands of people who wrote to the Attorney General, people who phoned the local member of parliament and those who called into talk-back radio to express their dismay and concern that a confessed paedophile could be released back into our idyllic community to be with his family over Christmas.
“Due to your help our children can now enjoy their Christmas, no longer fearful they will encounter this man as they strolled through the streets of Merimbula in what is meant to be the most fun-filled time of the year.
“It has taken a community to bring this person to justice – the police detectives who worked on the case, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the social workers who have provided emotional support in our time of need.
“But perhaps our greatest thanks go to our brave children.
“These young people have demonstrated strength and resolve far beyond their years.
“Without them being able to tell their stories and be believed, we would never have had a case and this predator would have continued to live among us and continue to prey upon others.
“We will not have complete closure until Van Ryn is sentenced in February and until that time we do remain cautious in being too overjoyed he is now incarcerated.
“After he is sentenced we will be able to tell more of the journey we have been through.
“It is believed others in the community have also been affected by the actions of Van Ryn and we would encourage those people to seek healing.
“This can be done by talking to the detectives at Bega Police Station or contacting the sexual assault hotline at Bega Community Health on 6492 4416.”
