It was about 8.30am police from far South Coast Local Area Command were alerted that a man was trapped on an island in the flooded Bega River.
Concerns were raised by neighbours who said the 34-year-old man had gone to retrieve a pump from a paddock on his dairy farm but had not returned.
Police contacted the man who confirmed he was stranded on a piece of land surrounded by raging floodwaters.
SES volunteers and police travelled to the scene but were unable to rescue the man due to the rising river.
The Westpac Helicopter was called to the scene and winched the man to safety.
The incident has prompted a warning from local police not to go near waterways affected by flooding and heavy rain.
