There are several events being held in the Bega Valley including a White Ribbon stall on December 5 in Littleton Gardens.
The 16 Days of Activism is an international campaign that seeks to make local communities a safer place for women and children by taking action to stop domestic violence.
Domestic or family violence occurs when a person uses violence, threats, intimidation or force to control or coerce a family member, partner or former partner.
That abuse can take the form of verbal, physical or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, social isolation, financial abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, threats to harm, property damage and stalking.
Locally there are several places those affected by domestic or family violence can seek help:
*Staying Home Leaving Violence
Operates Monday-Thursday 9am-5pm, call 6492 6239.
Staying Home Leaving Violence (SHLV) covers the Bega Valley area providing outreach support and advocacy for women who wish to stay in the home of their choice following domestic and family violence.
*Far South Coast Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (FSCWDVCAS)
Operates Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm, call 6492 5002 or 0458 921 000.
The service provides support for women and children seeking protection from domestic violence through the court system and Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVO).
*Mission Australia Bega Valley Homelessness Support Service
Intake/general inquiries Monday-Friday 8.30am- 4.30pm, call 4824 4000; after hours, call 6492 3597.
*Domestic Violence Line, 1800 646 463 or 1800 respect (1800 7377328), 24-hour, 7 days a week.
