Clinton Morehead, of Tathra, was reunited with his dog Jahna after the Bega Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) retrieved the stricken pup in a cliff rescue on Monday night.
VRA vice-captain Bowen Finnerty said after a couple of hours of worried searching for his lost dog, Mr Morehead called the police, who activated the VRA.
“We are the primary rescue organisation for road crashes, vertical rescues and animal rescues, so the police definitely activated the right service – the dog was about three-quarters the way down a steep cliff perched on a tree branch!” Mr Finnerty said.
“Two members abseiled down with a Stokes litter – essentially a basket we would normally use to rescue people.
“They put the dog in the basket and kept descending down to the beach.
“The dog jumped out and went straight in for a swim!”
Mr Finnerty said Jahna had been missing for around four hours, which meant she had spent much of that time sitting on the tree branch and was lucky to not have any serious injuries.
“The owner was frantic and tried climbing up to her - he almost hurt himself badly in the process.
He called police and they activated us – it was a good outcome.”
Mr Morehead took to Facebook to thank the VRA and emergency services for coming to his dog’s rescue.
“Thanks to our great Rescue Squad, Fire Rescue & police that all turned up to save my little girl Jahna dog, and also everyone else 4 being there 4 me and keeping an eye out 4 her. Thank you all.
Great karma 4 all.”
