Reasons for Hope – A Short Film And Conversations invites community members to come down to the Bega Indoor Sports Stadium on Sunday for a film and discussion night on climate change.
Films to be screened include “Reasons for Hope: Climate change is on our agenda”, “Cool Australia: Students and Sustainability”, “The Tide is Turning on Public Opinion” and “Youthfuel: Peabody Energy”.
One of the organisers, 19-year-old Tully Doole, said attendees will have the chance to say their piece on climate change and Dean Turner from The Crossing in Bermagui will also speak on the subject.
“The idea is that people will discuss what they think about the films, and any ideas on climate change brought up by the films,” she said.
“I think what I want people to get out of it is everyone having the chance to say what they think, and listen to other people’s ideas and suggestions on how as a community we can start progressing towards action on climate change.”
She said it was an important time to raise the issue of climate change given the little attention that will be paid to it at the G20 summit in Brisbane as it is not featured as a major item on the agenda, despite international calls from countries such as the US and France.
Climate change appeared in a paragraph on the draft summary of the G20 proceedings, but according to Ms Doole “it certainly needs much more discussion and planning other than just a footnote on the side, because it is a really big concern”.
Ms Doole invited those attending to leave their contact details, in order to start a community of concerned citizens who want to keep the pressure on Member for Bega Andrew Constance and the Bega Valley Shire Council about advocating for more action on climate change.
“I got involved in this particular project because I believe local action is really important, because you can’t jump straight into international change, you have to start from the ground up,” she said.
Reasons for Hope – A Short Film And Conversations will be on Sunday from 7.30pm at the Bega Indoor Sports Stadium to wrap up by around 9pm.
It is a free event, with a donation box for Fling Physical Theatre as it has allowed the use of the space.
The stadium’s kiosk will be open, and for more information visit Facebook and search for the event’s title
