This year was the 30th anniversary and the Bemboka Memorial was filled with arrangements and single blooms of many varieties.
Good spring weather with ample rain and minimal wind resulted in a large and varied array of entries this year.
Steve Maher from the Rose Society of NSW travelled to Bemboka to judge the rose categories this year.
“The roses in the hall here today are excellent and of a particularly good standard so it wasn’t easy, but it’s always a pleasure to attend a show like this,” he said.
This year the Bemboka Garden Show chose to honour one of its own, and instead of an outsider as in previous years, asked one of the founding members Joan Guthrie to open the show.
Although she missed the inaugural meeting she joined the Bemboka Garden Club in its first year 33 years ago.
“In its third year I was elected president and I suggested we hold a show – and wasn’t that a bombshell!” she said.
“But members rose to the challenge, we made sandwiches and a there was a quilt for raffle.
“Entry was $5, some things never change!”
“I’m humbled and honoured to be able to open this show, and very proud to be a member of the club.
“I think we can all agree it’s a stupendous show this year.”
Ms Guthrie talked about the history behind the shields given out, the Mona Campbell and Bella Rose Clifton shields, and said there would be a new one for member Harry Woseen who died this year.
As Mr Woseen loved his vegetable patch and gave out “Harry’s tips” at the club’s monthly meetings, the Harry Woseen Shield will be for best produce.
Although his presence was missed, Mr Woseen would have been very proud of the quality entries in the produce section, with Jenny Keys taking out the overall prize.
As the shield is yet to be made, Ms Keys was presented with a lemon tree, which she was very pleased to receive.
At the conclusion of the show, many entrants donated their arrangements and produce to be sold, with proceeds going to the Red Cross.
