Bega Women’s Refuge SOS call deferred by council
This is a very important issue. In addition to these important services for woman, I believe the community would be well served with a mens refuge. This should not be a competition of resources or gender by any means. Such a service would serve as an invaluable resource and would assist to alleviate the serious problem of domestic violence within our community.

Save that refuge the women need it stop taking what's important

This issue has been ongoing since July and it's now nearing the end of October. How can Council be ignorant to it? I can't believe that vulnerable women and children in our community are being placed at even more risk because there is no refuge, regardless of any other kind of support being offered. If current services are deemed adequate, why are they not being explicitly stated and advertised, so that the communitys mind can be put at rest?
If I were a woman in need of assistance, then I would want to know where I could go physically at a moments' notice - somewhere that I knew the staff were equipped to help and provide safety while I sorted out my next step. How much longer will it be before Council makes a decision?
Shan Watts
Council are not ignorant to it, there is a difference between deferring and ignoring. One Councillor is asking for Council to get behind some group, the other unrealistically motioning something else. There is a lot of posturing being done on the issue which isn't helping.
If you were a person in need of assistance, I would hope you had family / friends you could go to... failing that, the local police would be someone to call/visit if you need urgent help. I'm sure if you called (02) 4824 4000, your call wouldn't be ignored and help would be provided.
It is hardly Missions' fault that the Refuge needs the level of maintenance it apparently does, in order for it to be reopened. People seem more content throwing mud at Mission (and now Council) than being useful and trying to find a solution. Mission are no doubt doing their best to help vulnerable PEOPLE and the sub-standard conditions of the refuge are an obstacle that has been put in their path so the doors being closed are not their fault.
My question would be why is it that Mission were handed over (left) a Refuge that needs so much work done to it?

Bega Valley’s NBN installation begins
Depends on if you are in range. If not, then it would be satellite. Would be interesting to see what the quality is like ie lag/ping times, and drop outs. Supposed to be able to get 100mbps on wireless, just like the cable version.
