The Run Your Farm Up field day and forum is an event initiated by Bruce Davison and his wife Heidi, who said the name relates to the aim of lifting fertility in the Bega Valley.
“We see it as our contribution to sustainable agriculture in our region,” Mr Davison said.
“The aim is to deliver knowledge and information to assist farmers to improve the financial and environmental outcomes of agriculture.”
Saturday’s field day is the second in a series of five such events to be held over five years.
Around 70 people attended the field day in 2013 that focused on soil, while this year the event will focus on the production system.
The guest speaker is Peter Norwood, an agronomist and animal health specialist who will be presenting on soil fertility and plant nutrition and the effect this has on animal health and performance.
Mr Davison will be presenting on animal performance based on genotype and how this can lift profit per hectare by a significant margin, based on the work of Johann Zietsman.
He will also take attendees through the process of soil test interpretation and calculating deficiencies and required amendments for optimum plant performance.
A visit to a farm is included to look at a pasture cropping trial, compost production and farm scale worm farming, and Mr Norwood will give his assessment of the trial and other pasture management.
Each attendee will receive a detailed calculation sheet on animal feed efficiency and growth rate based on genotype, and a soil test interpretation spreadsheet.
There will also be three lucky door giveaways valued at $25 each.
It will be an informative day and is suitable for anyone who is managing land, whether you have a few hectares and one animal or a broadacre farm.
Registrations need to be submitted by Thursday night for catering, email heidi@candelosalers.com.
Attendance is free.
The Candelo Field Day starts at 8.30am for registration and a cuppa, presentations start at 9am and finish at 4.45pm.
