Chamber president Mal Barnes was browsing the store on Thursday morning and said it was good to see a big addition to the town’s commercial sector and hoped the large Carp St retail space wouldn’t be empty for long.
“Big additions to town always helps bring people in – they are always a drawcard,” Mr Barnes said.
“I know a lot of people don’t like big business, but it is an essential part of any retail streetscape.
“It’s now up to the small businesses to capitalise and draw in the extra people who will be coming to town.
“It’s also good to see a business that will help those ‘east of the clock’,” he added, saying Target would help entice shoppers beyond the anecdotal barrier of Gipps St.
“As I understand it they have employed 10 extra staff [than were at Target Country] and many more jobs during the construction as well.
“More employment is always good for the town.
“The fact this has expanded shows Bega is thriving.”
