Matt Fleet and Ben Harrop spent several days in Melbourne leading up to Saturday’s AFL grand final between Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans.
“It was awesome,” Fleet said on Monday, “just sensational.”
“The atmosphere in Melbourne just blew us away.”
Fleet said he and Harrop loved being among the audience for Thursday’s night’s Footy Show, but that was nothing to what awaited them in Federation Square the following morning.
“There were thousands of people,” Fleet said of the crowds for Friday’s traditional grand final parade.
“And Benny didn’t miss a single Swans supporter!
“He was going up to them all and saying sorry for their loss and really giving it to them,” Fleet said with a laugh.
“My father and two brothers and I were just as excited as Benny.
“Nothing went wrong the whole time – it was a magical experience for us and something we will all treasure.
As for Saturday’s brown and gold whitewash of the Swans, Fleet said they were almost in shock.
“I thought they would be a lot closer than that.
“That said, it was a cracking game by Hawthorn. Sydney maybe had a few passengers who didn’t turn up.
“Benny lives for his football – whether Aussie rules, league or soccer.
“He had an absolute ball.
“He was yelling the whole time and didn’t have any voice by the end of the game!
“I wouldn’t have wanted to share that with anyone else but him.”
