THE first ReBoot in Bermagui kicked off in a big way on Saturday.
Run by the Bermagui Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, it was a chance to participate in activities for health and wellbeing such as an ocean swim, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, Zumba and yoga along with providing a health clinic, food and entertainment through the weekend.
“It’s a not-for-profit event and we just want people to come to Bermagui and enjoy it,” committee member Julie Rutherford said.
The biggest events on the day were the morning fun runs - 7km Camel to Club, 5.4km Tilba Rd to Town and Bridge to Beach Kids run - which were attended by around 200 people.
A section of Lamont St was closed off in the morning, where the fun runs finished their race amid the cheers of the crowd in addition to there being food and interest stalls such as Can Assist, Cobargo Homemade Ice Cream and a sausage sizzle by the Wallaga Lake Men’s Shed.
The ReJuvenate Health Clinic was held in the Bermagui Surf Club, with a juice bar, therapeutic massage, sport massage, reflexology and dietary analysis stalls as well as presentations on such topics as meditation, acupuncture, kinesiology and homeopathic remedies for basic injuries and colds.
“It has been a great effort by a lot of people,” Bermagui Chamber of Commerce vice-president Keith Bowden said.
“The committee, of about five, spent four to five months of preparation.
“Even the local community – they’ve all banded together to assemble things and get it all up and running together.
“We’ve had great cooperation from the Council and police.”
Mr Bowden said during winter Bermagui gets very quiet, so ReBoot was an attempt to liven the town again.
“There was an idea to have an event in town to start the tourism cycle,” he said.
“We wanted to kick things off again, and this is our way of saying spring is here.”
Ms Rutherford said ReBoot had been good so far, and she was happy with the numbers who had turned up for the events.
“We’ve had beautiful weather, we couldn’t have been luckier,” she said.
“The object is to get people here who wouldn’t normally come, as well as the locals.
“Some tourists might know Merimbula or Batemans Bay, but haven’t come to Bermagui yet.
“I hope those people will say hey, this is a nice place.”
Ms Rutherford said ReBoot was for everyone of all ages, as those who can’t run can walk at the guided bird or whale watching walks.
“It crosses all genders and demographics, it has just got something for everyone,” she said.
There were still events on for Sunday, such as tai chi, boxing, barefoot bowls and an ocean swim in Horseshoe Bay.
In the ocean swim held Sunday morning, in the males results Paul Callaghan came first, and he also came first in his section of the Saturday runs.
Also, Simon Edwards from Canberra came second and Nigel Dobell from Bermagui came third.
In the women's section of the swim, Joann Rutherford of Sydney came first, Megan Rutherford of Bermagui second and Sundarami Fereti of Bermagui third.
